3.3.4 Surface patterns for pedestrian areas
The upper surface(s) of covers and grates used in pedestrian areas, with the exception of infill covers that are supplied in an unfilled condition, shall have the following features:
(a) A pattern designed so that the lower surface of the raised pattern allows water to gradually dissipate from the majority of the surface.
(b) The difference in height between the upper contact surface and the lower contact surface of the raised pattern shall be not greater than 6 mm.
(c) A slip-resistant pattern, and be in accordance with the test requirements specified in Clause 4.2.6. Where covers are supplied containing infill, the cover shall be slip- resistant tested in the supplied condition with infill.
(d) Designers of a pedestrian area shall specify the slip resistance classification for covers and grates in accordance with AS 4586 relevant to the location of the installation. If no classification is specified, the cover or grate shall be of the same level of slip resistance as the surrounding pavement.
NOTES: 1 The lower surface of pattern does not include features deeper than the lower surface, such as bolt holes and keyholes, which may pool water, or recesses for markings, such as logos and text, which may trap water. An example of dissipation of water from the lower surface is where water is poured on a cover which has been installed on a gradient of 2.5% and it is observed during dry weather conditions when the cover is exposed to sunlight that the water runs off at least 70% of the lower surface with the exception of markings during the period of a day.
2 Water may be considered to dissipate from the lower surface of the pattern if the remaining water forms puddles less than 1 mm depth.
3 Guidance on selection of slip resistance classification is provided in SA HB 198.
