(f) For practical assessment exercises, trainees shall be provided with any required equipment and documentation.
(g) For practical assessment exercises, trainees shall be required to demonstrate safe sorking practices at all times.
(h) For theory assessments, performance evidence shall he available of the trainee undertaking a written examination for theory components under conditions accepted for formal academic theory examinations.
NOTE: Practical assessment may take place on-job or off-job under conditions that simulate the workplace and may involve specific skill simulations.
4.2.4 Practical work
Practical work assessments should be conducted throughout the course. Additionally. practical exercises covering a range of diving operations that bring together a range of skills should he conducted periodically. The final two assessments should see the trainee taking on all planning and conducting all aspects of the diving operation. As the trainee is not a qualified dive supervisor at this stage, a qualified dive supervisor shall be present during such diving operations to ensure safe conduct.
4.2. Emergency management assessment
A supervisor’s ability to manage emergencies is a critical skill that is difficult to assess. Assessment should include a range of realistic simulations. In addition, assessment of the trainee’s likely ability to cope with emergencies may take into consideration the trainee’s general performance throughout the course.
4.2.6 Ongoing general performance assessment
In addition to individual unit assessments. assessment of the trainee’s general demeanour. maturity, leadership, organizational and conununications skills shall he conducted on an ongoing basis throughout the course.
4.2.7 Theory assessments
Theor components should be assessed throughout the course to gauge the trainee’s ability and progress.
4.2.8 Assessment of personnel with previous dive supervisory experience
Persons ith previous dive supervisory experience or training ho seek certification shall be comprehensively assessed by practical tests and written or oral theory assessments in accordance with this Standard.
4.3.1.1 General
The experience of instructors and assessors is critical to ensuring trainees achieve competence as dive supervisors. Instructors shall have formal training in instruction and assessment techniques. hold a recognized instructional qualification and meet relevant national, state and local requirements.
Instructors and assessors for core practical supervisory skill components shall have current supervisory experience and a broad background of general diving operations and their supervision. In addition to being an experienced dive supervisor, the instructors shall be highly experienced in the subject being taught. Instructors shall he able to devise tasks that will develop practical aptitudes and to know the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of presentation and assessment.
An instructor should be qualified at a higher level than that which they arc instructing and assessing. At the higher grades, however, this may not be possible, in which case the instructor or assessor should be qualified to the level that they are assessing.
Instructors should have several years of experience working at the level (or a higher level) as they are training and assessing. have significant practical experience as a diving instructor and good communication and interpersonal skills.
4.3.1.2 Other mxlruc’Ior.s
Instruction for some conipetencies. e.g. management. communications or medical topics. may be given by specialist instructors with demonstrated competence in their specialist field, While such instructors need not hold a formal qualification as a dive supervisor, they should have familiarity with occupational diving operations.
4.3.2 Equipment and facilities
Diving systems, operating procedures and diving locations may vary considerably, The training plan shall include details of all equipment and facilities. Table 13 provides a summary of the resources applicable to the training for the units of competency set out iii Section 3. L)iving equipment shall comply with the requirements in the relevant Part of the AS/NZS 2299 series.
It is recommended other useful resources such as the ADAS Supervisors Manual. The diving .upervi.or’s manual from IMCA and the NOAA Diving Manual be consulted in preparation of the training and assessment activities.
4.3.3 Emergency first aid equipment
